This post was written by David Canton: "Most of us realize that merely deleting a file doesn't really remove it from the hard drive or other storage media it resides on.  (For some background on this issue see a post I wrote a while back.)

Given how we use digital devices today - both for work and personal use - we can't just abandon this issue to our firm IT staff..."

This is a guest post was written by Larry Port: "In April, when the iPad came out, I offered to conduct an experiment for Ben StevensThe Mac Lawyer blog. The plan: read a traditional book, a second on a Kindle, and a third on an iPad, then write about it. Over the past year I'd been used to reading primarily on my Kindle and the occasional tree-based book, and was interested in figuring out the new publishing terrain once and for all.

Part 3: The iPad Book: The Given Day, by Dennis Lehane

A big thanks is in order to Dennis Lehane, who wrote one of the best and most compelling novels I've read in years, if not ever. The Given Day is a book so gripping and phenomenal, I was able to read it on an iPad without succumbing to sweet Internet temptations lurking just beyond the home button on the gorgeous device..."

Now you can make phone calls from Gmail without a Google Voice number. You can also download a free extension called Rapportive that shows the email sender's digital profile..."

"Bootstrap Website Advice"

| No TrackBacks

This post was written by Steven Matthews:  "For those lawyers or small business owners just starting out, setting down roots online can be a daunting process.  Not everyone has the budget to hire out a new website construction project, and on the other side, there are numerous sources that will encourage you to DIY - "do it yourself".  What frequently happens though, is the new entrepreneur gets stuck.  Do you cobble it together? Or, do you bite the bullet and find the budget?

The following advice won't be for everyone, but for the soon-to-be business owner, or anyone who's jumped into business over the past five years, hopefully some of it will resonate..."

This post was written by Rick Georges: "Google Voice is now accessible from the GMail interface, and is a worthy competitor to Skype. I have used, and love, Skype, and its quality is now ready for prime time. However, now that I can make free long distance call directly from my GMail interface, along with checking contacts, and email, I will be using Google Voice more. Ultimately, while it is risky putting all of my online eggs in one basket, there is no denying the convenience of having it all on one page. I am also transitioning to my Google email account for everything; so, if you want to contact the FutureLawyer from now on, email me at: rickgeorges@gmail.com."

"Worldox in the Cloud"

| No TrackBacks

This post was written by John Heckman: "Worldox has just announced a "Complete Cloud" offering. Unlike simple SaaS programs, Worldox offers a Virtual Server 2008 in the Cloud, complete with Worldox GX2, Office 2010 Pro (including Exchange Server with spam filters), secure backup, and antivirus protection, all on a subscription basis.  It will also be possible to upload other programs to the Virtual Server as well, and run everything off the cloud. Some additional offerings, such as the Blackberry Enterprise Server, are also available, also on a subscription basis..."

This post was written by Susan Cartier Liebel: "An old post/column I wrote -  e-mail etiquette (or lack thereof) and the impact on clients - led me to check out other technologies which, without policies regarding their use, offend clients and people in general.  There was a great archived article in Missed Manners which discusses the impact of poor etiquette when using Blackberries, PDAs and Smartphones as well as e-mail.

It's worth a read because most people don't realize they are behaving rudely.  As business people we have to be extra-aware or risk our professional and personal reputations and relationships.

Technological advances give us new freedoms.  But they also come with a whole new set of rules regarding their use. If inappropriately used, those very freedoms can impact our behaviors and destroy our professional and personal relationships.

This post was written by John Heckman: "Word 2003 and 2007 have a "feature" that creates a read-only copy of a document when you copy it to start a new document.  This can sometimes be turned on without users being aware of it.  In theory it is supposed to prompt you when you create the new document, but that doesn't always work. The net result is that users wind up with documents they can't edit and don't know why.

To turn off this feature in a given document, in Word 2003, go to Tools | Options | Security and uncheck the box that says "Read Only Recommended."

In Word 2007, Select "Save As" a Word document. When the Save box appears, click "Tools" at the bottom left corner, then General Options. Make sure the box "Read-Only Recommended" is NOT checked.  Note that if you are using a document management system such as Worldox, you will have to exit out of the DMS in order to get the native Word 2007 save dialog to do this.

This post was written by Randall Ryder: "From digital classrooms to digital courtrooms, video conferencing appears to be making a comeback. In a recent divorce case, part of the custody agreement involved Skype videochat availability.

Stay mobile and stay in touch

Last fall, Sam was out of the office frequently to help with his newborn. This fall, Randall IV is on the way, so I will likely be working from home often.

Yes, you can email and call co-workers, but video chat adds another level to your communication. Most people rely on body language more than they think, and by seeing who you are talking to, it can help the conversation..."
